According to a research organized by the UK Office of Science and Innovation’s Horizon Scanning Centre, future robots could ask for the equal citizen’s rights as human beings over the next 50 years.
Supporters of the robotic rights argue that if a robot can share human burden in almost all the spheres of existence, they also deserve a certain intensity of rights, therefore, robots should be conferred with their share of rights. If there will be rights, robots would also have to perform some duties as well, means you will see robots following the traffic signals or rules and other similar responsibilities of common men.
Sir David King, the U. K. government’s chief scientific adviser asserts,
We’re not in the business of predicting the future, but we do need to explore the broadest range of different possibilities to help ensure government is prepared in the long-term and considers issues across the spectrum in its planning. The scans are aimed at stimulating debate and critical discussion to enhance government’s short and long term policy and strategy.
Right now, the idea of the robotic rights just seems hypothetical and requires some sturdy wings that possibly may grow in the distance future. Who knows the future machines will have the voting right and choose the leadership for the nation alongside human beings?
